Sitting in world history class, Lauren doodled on her homework and gazed into space. He teacher was droning on about ancient Greece and how all the gods and goddesses became famous. Lauren, having stayed up late the previous night preparing for a chemistry test, laid her head on the desk and calmly closed her eyes. She told herself that she didn’t need to see her teacher as long as she listened. That way she could rest her tired eyes. Slowly though, her teacher’s voice drifted away…
Lorenia, Goddess of the trees, rode gallantly on her pegasus, Adelpha, towards her home in the Forest of Tranquility. She arrived at the pegasus stable and slid off smoothly. She consoled Adelpha and began to walk to her house, deeper in the forest. Being the Forest of Tranquility, everything was calm and quiet. The only sounds were coming from the rustle of the leaves beneath the feet of critters on the forest floor. As Lorenia approached her house, she suddenly heard a loud yell in the distance. The animals were not used to booming noises, so they were disturbed and began running around frantically. Lorenia instantly knew something was wrong so she ran back to the pegasus stable and took off with Adelpha. She speedily galloped in the direction of the yell.
As she rode down the path, she began to smell a strange smell. In the distance, she could see a large area filled with bright orange flame. The smell was smoke! As she approached, it became harder to see through the dense, burning air. Lorenia’s friend, Sarenda, who was the goddess of grass, lived near where the flame was growing. She spotted Sarenda in the chaos and Sarenda explained what happened. She had seen the goddess of flame, Cerberus, come and start the fire. Cerberus and Sarenda both were interested in Linus, god of light, so Cerberus wanted to scare Sarenda. As the goddess of trees, Lorenia knew she had to protect the forest from complete destruction from the flames. She took control and sent Sarenda to fetch Poseidon to bring a large amount of water to the forest from the sea.
While Sarenda was away, Lorenia got to work warning the animals of the forest to watch out and leave the forest. The fire was progressing quickly and it was getting smoky. Most of the animals were worried about their home and wanted to help stop the fire. They looked to Lorenia to instruct them. Lorenia knew that they could stop the fire so she ordered the animals to bring bails of water from the nearby stream. Soon, they had poured water in a full circle around the fire to stop it from progressing. When Poseidon arrived, all he had to do was muffle the small flame that remained.
Poseidon, being a much higher-in-rank god, saw what a great job Lorenia had done leading the creature and saving the Forest of tranquility. He was so impressed that he went to tell Zeus, who was the god of all gods, and also Poseidon’s good friend. Moments later, Lorenia was called to Zeus’ throne. Zeus told Lorenia that she was a true hero and should be honored for her bravery. Lorenia was very modest and told him that anyone else would have done the same. Zeus insisted that she was a hero and decided to dedicate that day, January 8th, to Lorenia as the day she saved the Forest of Tranquility.
Lorenia returned home to a large celebration party. Everyone was so grateful for Lorenia’s hard work and courage. They all agreed that her quick-thinking was what saved them. The celebration went into the night and at the end of the festive night, they wanted Lorenia to give a speech. Lorenia thought for a minute and slowly began, “Thus ends a day memorable to me; it has decided my future destiny…”
Lauren awoke with a start. She quickly looked around to see if anyone had noticed that she had fallen asleep. She spotted her friend, Sarah, snickering across the room. Quietly, she thought about the exotic dream she had just had. She listened to the rest of the lesson. Her teacher finished up the lesson and gave them free time to do the homework. Sarah came over to work with Lauren. She laughed at Lauren about sleeping and they began. The first question was about Zeus and Lauren gave Sarah the answer. Sarah asked Lauren how she could possibly know the answer if she was asleep. Lauren smiled, shrugged, and thought that she should do some more sleeping in class to get answers.
